THE A’ISHA AZAR DANCE PROJECT is the Brainchild of Namva Chan, who produces the Project. In 2021 she convinced A’isha that she needed to start teaching classes online. The Project has become dear to A’isha’s heart as she reaches out to dancers as far away as Europe to teach in her unique method, based not only on dance theory, but also on cultural connection and seeing each dancer as as unique individual, with her/his own set of skills and challenges.

To learn more about the Project contact A’isha here or go to Facebook, to “The A’isha Azar Dance Project”.

The Project is all about studying the dance in depth. We teach a once a month class as well as workshops. Our Project classes are on Zoom and we have classes archived on video for those who want to study at home alone.

Training

A’isha Azar has been involved in the dances and cultures of the Middle East and North Africa since 1974. She has studied with dancers from Middle Eastern/North African countries as well as some of the finest Western dancers. It is a long list with many names , but a few teachers who have greatly influenced her are Jodette Silhi of Jordan who was her first teacher, Badawia of Jordan, Mona Said of Egypt, Fifi Abdou of Egypt, Nadia Hamdi of Egypt, Kay Artle of Sweden, Masoud Chamasmani of Iran, David of Scandinavia. From the USA, Cassandra Shore, Shareen el Safy, Nejat, Dahlena, Ne Kajira Janan, Morocco, Mark Balahadia, and Hallah Moustafa, to name a few.

A’isha considers her friends and acquaintances from countries of origin to have been a very big part of her dance and cultural education. Without their willingness to share and their encouragment, she states that her education would be incomplete. She sends her most sincere thanks. Ma’a khalis el shukur!

“Belly dance is the physical manifestation of and visual compliment to the music.  The dance has specific movements based in root concepts which express in many ways, giving the dancer a  movement repertoire that allows her to express the emotional content in the music as well as its instrumental and vocal qualities. The dancer enjoys a full range of personal expression within the music and dance.”
